But James Randolph never served in a big church. What this meant to his family was that they had a hard time making ends meet. In 1891, he and Elizabeth uprooted the family and went to Jacksonville to seek a more prosperous future. Jacksonville, a port city along the St. Johns River, was an epicenter of the New South and fast becoming a major city.

And, it was not just a new custom; it was the law. So-called Jim Crow laws were common in the South and were a central part of the reassertion of white supremacy. Without federal assistance, there was little African Americans could do in the South to resist the new order. Jacksonville was completely segregated. Nonetheless, James made sure that his sons did not succumb to doubt or self-pity. He told his children that there were many influential men in history who had African roots: the Carthaginian general Hannibal who had led his forces and elephants against the Romans; the working-class American revolutionary Crispus Attucks; the radical abolitionists and rebels Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, and Toussaint L’Ouverture; and the indomitable, uncompromising, and unrivaled Frederick Douglass.
